Maeshowe Beings

Maeshowe is a Neolithic chambered cairn on Orkney, the interior is covered in Viking runic graffiti left after a break in and within this there is an engraving of a wolf/dragon like creature. With very little known of the inscription it stands out against the rest of the engravings which detail the exploits of the Viking invaders, their names and some bragging.

With very little to go on I like to think that the drawing was left as an apology of sorts, a singular invader apologetic for the mess their companions were leaving behind in a clearly sacred burial place. In repeating the shape within my work it becomes an emblem of sorts, a symbol. It begins to develop its own meaning and post humous importance.
